Choosing a college is hard.
You have to consider school resources, community fit, personal preference, geography, and so much more. For most BEAM students, money is a deciding factor; we know that you sometimes have to choose a second choice college because it's more affordable! Our hope is that college scholarships make it easier for you to prioritize a school that fits without going into debt in the process!
BEAM has four new college scholarships of $3,000 - $10,000 / year to give out! These scholarships are for students who plan to get a STEM degree.
The goal of this scholarship is to help you attend your top choice, supportive, school, even if that school hasn’t offered you enough money to afford it. For example, if you want to attend SUNY Stony Brook, but room and board is not covered, this money can help cover that cost.
We will guarantee your scholarship money for up to 5 years of college enrollment.
This money is available thanks to a corporate sponsorship with Jane Street Capital.
Who will get this scholarship?
BEAM is looking for:
Students who have financial need - you need $ to afford to attend your top choice
You don’t already have a big scholarship like Questbridge or Posse
A strong commitment to STEM - you know why you chose your major(s) because you did something like
a summer program or
an internship, or
you took classes in these areas in high school
or other ways of showing interest; we know not everyone has access to these kinds of opportunities!
Preparation for STEM
4 years of math and science HS classes
Ideally, this includes Calculus (again, we know not every HS offers this class!)
Involvement with BEAM - you’ve been talking to us, you’ve come on field trips, you’ve taken Saturday classes, etc.
“Strong fit” colleges - this means your top choice school has a good graduation rate and offers what you need for your major
BEAM is especially interested in making SUNYs and HBCUs affordable for students
